Kenya Society Annual Lunch - Monday 4th November 2002 HE Mrs Nancy Kirui, the High Commissioner of Kenya gave an excellent talk on "Elections in Kenya Progress and Procedures." Special focus on Kenya's recent floods and the depletion of Kenya's Forests. Kenya highlighted as a family favourite for holidays. Young Scott Chisholm not even in his teens displayed remarkable journalistic skills talking about his Kenya holiday experience. His conclusion? "Even better than I thought . I liked all of it!" Scott and his grandparents enjoyed their stay at Voyager beach resort near Mombasa. Society Meetings The annual summer party hosted by Her Excellency Mrs Nancy Kirui, Kenya High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, in conjunction with the Kenya Society was a great success. Despite the London Transport Tube strike, the turnout was good. The occasion was blessed with the presence of His Worshipful the Mayor of Kisumu, Shakeel Shabbir. The Kisumu Mayor presented the Kenya Society with the Key to the City of Kisumu. The Key was received on behalf of the Society by Sir John Edwards, Chairperson Kenya Society. The winner and the short-listed authors of the recent Michael Caine Literature Award for African Writing 2002 were introduced to the crowd. This years winner was a Kenyan Binyavanga Wainaina. Mr Wainaina, appealed for more support for African writers. The other short listed writers who attended the summer party were Amanda Ngozi Adichie (Nigeria), Florent Couao-Zotti (Benin), and Rory Kilalea (Zimbabwe). The Caine Prize, awarded annually for African creative writing, is named after the late Sir Michael Caine, former Chairman of Booker plc and Chairman of the Booker Prize management committee for nearly 25 years. Sir John R Johnson, KCMG former British High Commissioner to Kenya gave a talk about his new book entitled: Colony To Nation: British Administrators in Kenya 1940-1963. His talk focused on his involvement with the Habitat project and a UK initiative to provide housing for the resettlement of slum-dwellers in Kenya. Kenya received high profile press coverage in the UK on the 50th anniversary
of the death of His Majesty King George the 6TH the father to the present
British Queen, Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. February 6th 1952 was the date
when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the 2nd received news that her father
passed away in his sleep whilst she was on holiday in Kenya. Media organisations
and historical societies are looking for people who remember the Queen's
visit to Kenya including her subsequent visits in 1983. If you have any
